DEMOGRAPHIC PROFILE

Cagayan Valley Region designated as Region 2 is located at the northeastern portion of Luzon. It is composed of five (5) provinces, namely: Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, Nueva Vizcaya, and Quirino. The region has four (4) cities: The component cities of Cauayan and Ilagan in Isabela and Tuguegarao in Cagayan, while, Santiago also in Isabela is an independent city. It has 89 municipalities, 2,311 barangays and 10 congressional districts.

Cagayan Valley is the fourth largest region of the Philippines in terms of land area. It covers 26,838 square kilometers of this area. Three fourths cover the provinces of Cagayan and Isabela.

Most parts of the region lies in a large valley in Northeastern Luzon, between the Cordillera and the Sierra Madre Mountain ranges. The Cagayan River, the country’s longest river, runs through its center and flows out from its source in the Caraballo Mountains in the South to the Luzon Strait in the north, in the town of Aparri, Cagayan. The region encompasses the outlying islands of the Babuyan and Batanes to the North.

The region has a wide expanse of rich agricultural commodities. The region has already earned the distinction of being a major food supplier to the rest of the country, particularly in grains and legumes. Due to the soil’s richness, the valley takes pride in organically grown produce.

It is likewise abound with natural resources and exudes with development potentials that consist of rich agricultural areas, forest lands and grasslands as well as marine resources.

The region’s mainland is accessible by either land or air transportation. Tuguegarao City, the capital of Cagayan is the entry point if you arrive by air. There are at least three (3) flights daily coming from Manila and going to Tuguegarao, nowadays. Cauayan Airport also caters four (4) flights a week via Cebu Pacific to and from Manila. When one desire to enter the Region by land, he will take the bus going north (Victory Liner, Florida Liner, etc) from Manila via Sta. Fe, Nueva Vizcaya or Sta. Praxedes, Cagayan. For the province of Batanes, one may take the plane directly from Manila to Basco or travel by land to Tuguegarao City and take the plane “North Sky or Sky Pasada” to Basco, Batanes.
